How do I design quality typographic images?

First, start with the message to convey the product and the typography.
Then, think of the colors, text, and the way that text creates a graphic that corresponds with the feel of the message and how it will look on the background color of the product.
Lastly, the tricky part is selecting a unique way to have my text and colors breathe life into the message.
